Install Ubuntu on Sata Raid 0 - dmraid - dual boot windows xp
 

Hi,

I try to install Ubuntu 5.1 on my computer which has Windows XP already installed (dual boot).

My system:
AMD 64 K8V
2 HDD each 160 GB Sata Raid0
Partitions:
sda1: Windows XP
sda2: extended partitions with logial partitions inside
sda3: Linux ext3
sda4: Linus Swap
--> all together add up to 320 GB.

What I did so far:
I followed principally the instructions of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FakeRaidHowto .
I used dmraid which gives me the following information:

/dev/mapper/via_dcbbdafifj3 is Linux ext3, and
/dev/mapper/via_dcbbdafifj4 is Linux swap
...

What happened:
- the bootloader works, I con choose between the OS to be started
- when starting Ubuntu, the Ubunutu screen appears what might indicate that the kernel is working properly.
- But then the loading process aborts giving error messages such as: can't find /dev/sda3 or can't find /dev/mapper/via_dcbbdafifj3 (depending on which mode I boot as the menu.lst was altered to test). Furthermore I get error messages such as: /bin/sh can't access tty; job control turned off.

Somehow it looks as if the system doesn't mount the sda3 properly or can't mount it. Maybe there's only to tune something in fstab or menu.lst.

Your hints and help is very appreciated.

I too had trouble installing Breezy to my SATA drive. What worked for me was putting the /boot partition on an ATA drive (hda) and the / and /home partitions on my SATA drive. Not sure why it didn't work the first-tenth time I tried installing to SATA, but the above method solved the problem for me. It has to be something related to loading the SATA controller driver.

I've written a guide for installing Ubuntu 10.04 on RAID1 and RAID10 in case anybody is interested. It should work with Debian Squeeze 6.0, and newer Ubuntu releases as well:
