install terminal error ???


hi,

i am new to linux and im trying to install python on ubuntu 7.10 when i type

./configure i get this

jessica@jessica-desktop:~$ cd '/home/jessica/Documents/Python-2.5.1'
jessica@jessica-desktop:~/Documents/Python-2.5.1$ ./configure
checking MACHDEP... linux2
checking EXTRAPLATDIR...
checking for --without-gcc... no
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.
jessica@jessica-desktop:~/Documents/Python-2.5.1$ sudo -i
[sudo] password for jessica:
root@jessica-desktop:~# cd '/home/jessica/Documents/Python-2.5.1'
root@jessica-desktop:/home/jessica/Documents/Python-2.5.1# ./configure

i dont know why this is happerining and what i should do to install it as when i try it dosnt work ??

Why are you trying to install it from source? It's easier to just use Ubuntu's package manager for this. Look for Synaptic in the menu and then once you find it, use it to search for Python and then install (or you could run "sudo apt-get install python" from the command line).
