Install Freezes at "Select a Disk"

Im trying to Install Ubuntu, and when it gets to the "Select a Disk" step ('You can have the installer automatically create space in various ways on any one of the following hard disks. Alternatively, you can partition the disks manually'.....step 5 of 6), it shows "Starting up the Partitioner", and thenthe cursor just goes to the spinning circle, as if its doing something. I can click around and otherwise use the computer, but it will not let me get any further with the installation.

The CD Rom light is solid, and the hard drive light is on, but the hard drive is not clicking. I've switched cd-roms, and hard drives. Any suggestions?

The hard drive(s) are completely blank, this is NOT a dual boot machine. So no need to worry about loss of data.

Any help is extremely appreciated. Thank you in advance.

What kind of Hard Drive?---eg PATA/IDE, SATA, SCSI, etc.

Ubuntu 6.06

Maxtor hd, IDE

**edit**

I downloaded the 6.10 iso last night, and made it again to step 5 of 6, this time it allowed me to 'manually edit partition table'. I selected that, but then it showed no hard disks...

so, im guessing my HD's are just shot. I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks for the help.
