i8kmon not working in daemon mode

I'm running Kubuntu on a new Dell Latitude D610. In order to get the fans to work correctly I'm trying to set up i8kmon to automatically monitor the fans. I've had problems getting i8kutils setup but by using the "force=1" argument I can get the kernel module loaded. lsmod shows that it is loaded.

Whenever I run "/etc/init.d/i8kmon start" it looks as though it starts fine, but a "ps aux" shows nothing about i8kmon. If I go to the command line and type "i8kmon -d &" I can see it running.

Has anyone seen this in Ubuntu before and why won't the startup file load i8kmon at boot? The startup file looks like it should run without a hitch.
