I want a kick-butt media player
I'm new to this stuff so I'm just getting accustomed to installing applications. I figured out how to install much needed stuff, for the most part anyways. But now I want a really good media player. One that is both cosmetically sleek and lightweight.
I dont know how applications are in regards to cross-platforms of Linux systems so I asked here since I'm running Ubuntu 5.10. Any suggestions? And if you do suggest something you may need to guide me through the install. So far I really like the idea of how I just type "sudo apt-get install application_name" for the most part on everything I installed thus far, is it the same for everything else? So I guess it's a 2 part question. |
XMMS for music and Mplayer for movies.
Been using xmms for years and it's great for music. I personally believe that mplayer is the best media player for movies out there. The link posted below references an easy guide to follow regarding installing many different applications. http://easylinux.info/wiki/Ubuntu |
Yeah that link is GREAT! I've been following that for all the things I've installed so far and it's been great. Let me try this one out.

Hands down the best musik player that I have found so far is Amarok. That thing is just badass. It is a little bigger than winamp with all the plugins I used to use, but it rocks. If you want something slimmer, you could try Rhythmbox. It is a mix between foobar and iTunes.

What I used on Windows was Winamp and I could minimize it down to the system tray which was great and outta the way. I also had controls with a firefox plugin that had the buttons on my browser and since that was open the most it was great. Anything that can come close to this?

XMMS is a lot like Winamp and not real sure if firefox possesses a pluggin for XMMS. You could install gdesklets to control XMMS but gdesklets is controlled from the desktop.
