I/O Error... Help!!! Please!!!
I am trying to move some of my files/documents from my old Windows XP computer into this one. Whenever I insert a disc into my drive and then open it up from the desktop, the file names are just made up of a bunch of question marks, and the icons are scattered throught the place. What's causing this problem? When I insert the disc back into my other PC running XP, its fine. What I do is right-click on the CD icon on the desktop and goto Eject. Once the CD is ejected, I press the eject button on my CD drive to bring the disc back in. At this point, I can see the correct names and icons in the disc. But when I try to drag and drop a file from the CD to my dekstop (or anywhere, for that matter, it keeps bringing up an "I/O Error". It disappeared at one point and I was able to transfer files again, but now it came back... How do I go about fixing this blasted error for good?
I used Automatix in the past. That brought up many problems and errors. But they were later fixed up. I also installed firefox32 with the java/flash plugins, they had problems, but they were fixed as well.
But after that, Totem wouldn't play my DVDs anymore. So I was refered to use EasyUbuntu. After I used EasyUbuntu, some problems came back as well as the ones above...
Someone told me to just re-install 6.06, but I don't want to go through all that trouble again, I just want to fix this up.
EDIT: C'mon guys, 16 views and no one's ever heard of this problem? T_T
Here's what I mean about the I/O Error: see pic
And here's what I mean about the question marks: see pic

I'm not an expert here but this could be a character encoding issue.
You might want to post your /etc/fstab...

That's the file where there are the commands for mounting devices, including, which character set to use when mounting.
To open it, you'd state in a terminal (Menu: Applications, Accessoires, Terminal):

Okay, my fstab says:
EDIT: Okay, when I pasted it, it didn't look formatted correctly, so here's a link to the screencap
I see the floppy drive in there... But how come I can't access it?

Please read, How to edit and understand /etc/fstab.
I've did this myself, and if I were you, I'd try to change the last two lines of your fstab to
Quote:
/dev/hdb /media/cdrom0 auto ro,auto,user,exec 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,auto,user,sync 0 0
|
for a test. Could be wrong, of course, but the direction should be right.
You can instantly remount all devices by issuing
at the terminal.
Make sure to create a backup copy of the fstab file before saving it, and also, be careful about editing the line with your root partition (second column: "/").

Thanks for letting me post without having a clue.

Okay, I get this:
Quote:
miki@Ubuntu:~$ sudo mount -a
Password:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
|
I don't understand what I am supposed to do. What am I supposed to enter for floppy?

I'm sorry: I don't understand either. - You'd probably need to get into the fstab documentation, or to keep on asking specific questions...
