Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

The Intel HD Audio Controller is for the HD Audio "Bus" (Azalia) not a sound "device". The HD Audio Bus has devices hanging off of it, like the sound codec. Check and see what sound codec is attached and load a driver for that. Looks like possibly Realtek since it looks like you have a Realtek Modem installed off of that bus as well and most manufacturers often pair them up. Check the specs of your laptop and see what Audio Codec is on the board, then you will need to load a driver for that codec.
Pretty well known problem with IntelHDA and Gutsy. I have the same chipset you do, and followed the instructions on the first link specific to my model(Acer 5315), and it worked perfectly. If that doesn't work, I've had pretty good success updating alsa to the latest version, and following the instructions for setting up IntelHDA support on other computers.
