I want to replace my damaged version of Fedora 8 with Ubuntu 7.04. On Fedora I can run opera, Thunderbird and Firefox. I have a ubuntu 7.04 cd that I want to overwrite Fedora. I have a back up disk that runs every night. I checked it and my files from yesterday, 3/10/2009 are on the backup.
Can I just start the install of ubuntu?
If you have a backup of your data, then you should be able to just install right over the top of Fedora.
But why not use a newer version of Ubuntu? 8.04 LTS is the latest long term support version and 8.10 is the latest bleeding edge version. The new bleeding edge version 9.04 is going to be out on April 23, so if you wanted to you could probably install the Alpha 5 and dist-upgrade when it's finalized.
Yes you can - if you are sure that all the files you need to save are backed up and can be restored then you can go ahead and install a new distro over the existing one.

I would use caution, 7.04 is already past its EOL, and is no longer supported... Use a current, supported version of Ubuntu.. 8.04 at minimum. 8.10 is current, and 9.04 will be released next month.
I bought two cd's from The Linux Store ubuntu 8.10. The first one
appeared to be damaged. I put it in the cdromm amd it wouldn't spin
up. I bought a second and itwon't spin up. So, I guess I must be doing something wrong or I am not doing the istall right.
I have a back up of my /home. I would appreciate step by step
instructions. I am 67 retired from Bell Labs and getting dumber by the day.
