Question I do not want icon for usb flash drive on my desktop (but I do want it mounted)

I am trying to get clear all extraneous stuff from my desktop. I am down to one issue...

Ubuntu/Gnome 8.04 (same situation in 7.10) - I have a USB flash drive which I plan to use for daily backup always plugged into a port on the back of the PC. When I boot Ubuntu it nicely finds and mounts the USB drive for me. It shows an icon for the drive on the desktop. The only way I have found to disappear the icon from the desktop is to unmount the drive. This is not what I want to do.

Is there a way to allow the drive to be automounted yet not show an icon for it on the desktop? I also have a large NTFS drive - sdb - installed in the PC (also use the PC for Windows some times). It also automounts and places an icon on the desktop. I would just a soon it not be shown on the desktop.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Ken

run 'gconf-editor' and go to apps > nautilus > desktop > volumes visible (I hope I remember correctly as I've not seen a GNOME desktop in a while)

Thanks klearview - I think you nailed it. Except that there is a key /schemas/apps/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible which I think is overriding my change to volumes_visible as you described. I get the message "Currently pairs and schemas can't be edited. This will be changed in a later version." when I try to change the schema key and the volume icons remain :-((

I did disappear the trashbin icon from the desktop some time back however, I do not remember how.
