i 686 kernel ?

I installed ubuntu 7.10 on Sunday. I love it but it identifies my pc as i-386 not i-686. I had the same thing happen in Fedora and simply installed a different kernel to fix the problem. Is that the case with ubuntu?
Thanks

I would that is the thing you are seeing. You could recompile and change CPU option to the i686 but doubt one sees much of an improvement. It would enable some low level features the chip may offer.
