I've lost my Sounds

Distro is Ubuntu 6.06
Everything was working OK, but following a routine software update I have no sound. Nothing on Boot up, no media sound, nothing. I have checked cables, also everything works OK if I use windows (same sound card, cables and speakers)
If I go to Applications > Sound & Video > Sound Recorder I would expect to be able to adjust sound levels but I get the message:
Error
Your audio capture settings are invalid. Please correct them in the Multimedia settings.
I cannot find the multimedia settings.
Can someone give me a push in the right direction.
Thanks

Come on folks,
I have searched the Forum's, Googled and found several people who have the same problem but no one who has an answer.
It doesn't sound too difficult,......where do I find the Multimedia settings???

My Error Message is;

"Your audio capture settings are invalid. Please correct them in the Multimedia settings"

but where are the multi media settings?

Help please

I still have not fixed this but I have upgraded from dapper to edgy in an attempt to find a fix.
The result is that the speaker volume control now works but the microphone does not. The error message I have is the same as in my first post in this thread, (see above)
Everything still works OK in Windows XP, so cables and sound card are OK
Any ideas would be helpful

Try http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Compre...olutions_Guide - but read it carefully and have the right install CD to hand.

Thanks Zelator,
I had already found the Comprehensive Guide and worked through carefully, including reinstalling the VIA 82xx driver from the ALSA Project.
As I said above upgrading to Edgy Eft gave me back the "Playback" sounds but still leaves me without Capture (microphone input).
If I examine the Sound preferences System>Preferences>Sound, I find that all the Playback devices are set to auto detect and all test OK with volume variable on the mixer and on the "speaker" icon.

But Sound Capture does not test OK.
It shows there are;
VIA 8235 (1) If I try to test this I see the Test Window but no sound out.
VIA 8235 (2) If I try to test this I get a long error message, which ends with "....chat: Could not open resource for writing"
ALSA Test Window but no sound out.
OSS Test Window but no sound out
Test Sound Test Window with a brief burst of distorted sound out.
Silence Silence.

From this I suspect I need to remove the VIA 8235 (2) item but don't know how to do that.

All gain controls are set at maximum for the above tests and where a test is successful the "volume" can be adjusted on the mixer and on the "speaker" icon.

I am not sure that it will solve the problem but if you can tell me how to get rid of the offending item it might be a step in the right direction.
Thanks

There is a more up-to-date version of the Comprehensive Guide at http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449 which has some stuff I have not explored yet that might help you.
We have two machines with the same on-board soundcard, this one is Kubuntu 6.06 installed from a Kubuntu CD, and the sound works, the other is Ubuntu + Kubuntu 6.06 upgraded from 5.10 and sound has stopped working, even for the Ubuntu 6.10 live CD and Knoppix, so I suspect the card is duff, but I would really like to prove it before spending money.

Thanks again Zelator, I was using the latest version of the Comprehensive Guide and as I said above it didn't fix the problem.
My Sound "card" is on the Motherboard and is OK with Windows XP but I bought a new one to try to solve the Ubuntu problem; it made no difference.
It would be helpful if you could check the Test Buttons on the >System>Preferences>Sound window and let me know your results.... please
You will also see that this allows you to choose which sound controls to use. I had tried this and my results are reported above in my earlier post, it did not fix my problem but it might help you.
Cheers

I have tried the sound tests, in both Ubuntu and Kubuntu, with no success. sudo modprobe --first-time snd-via82xx shows that the module is already loaded, and everything behaves as it should, but silently - I have tried headphones instead of the speakers and that is not the problem.
When I get time I will try configuring the card through one of the media players as the Guide suggests. The only difference that I can see between my pure Kubuntu machine and the Ubuntu one is that the Ubuntu one shows an alternative sound card option at system>preferences> sound - MPU-401 UART - which does nothing either.

If anyone is following this thread from my original question "Where are the Multimedia Settings", the answer to that is they are found in lmms (Linux Multimedia Settings) which can be found and installed from the Synaptic package Manager.
However that does not solve my ongoing problem that I cannot input any sound from a Microphone (although all works OK in Windows)

Simple fix just go up to the task bar in the upper lest hand corner of your desktop and left click the mixer icon and select show mixer and turn up the volume on the pcm chanel of your sound device.

That would be nice - just turn up the volume. Alas no, life is rarely that simple.

I may have found an answer !
I use an internet 'phone (VOIP) which has a USB connection to the PC. When this is unplugged the controls on the sound card work normally.
Thanks to all for input.
