Does your ADSL modem use pppoe to connect to the internet? If so, you want to open a terminal (applications > accessories > terminal) and run:
Code:
sudo pppoeconf
This will launch a program that will guide you to configure your ADSL modem. See this page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ADSLPPPoE
If you have installed the latest version of Ubuntu, 8.10 Intrepid, then pppoeconf should already be installed. I'm pretty sure it is installed in 8.04 Hardy LTS also.

You don't need to know anything about programming to use linux. I don't know anything about programming either. There is a learning curve to using linux though. It is entirely different from Windows. Here is a good site for getting started with Ubuntu:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/
Also, read through this pdf document for getting started with linux:
http://www.tuxradar.com/linuxstarterpack

And welcome to the LQ forums!!

So did you get the ADSL modem working then? If not please post back. Include any errors that may have come up from running sudo pppoeconf in the terminal.

Do you get an option for more than one device when you run sudo pppoeconf ? Like a dial up modem and the ADSL modem perhaps? If so, make sure you select the right device for the ADSL connection.

Doesn't it give you an option to select which device you want to configure? Try using the Tab key or the arrow keys to select between the devices when you run sudo pppoeconf. If that doesn't help, try disabling the dial up modem in the computers BIOS. Or if it is a desktop computer then just remove the dial up modem card and try running pppoeconf again.

Also, is your ADSL modem connected by ethernet or usb cable? Try to connect via ethernet if you can.
