Here is an excellent (rate 5+ STAR plus)
The Perfect Setup - Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Server (Dapper Drake) This is a detailed description about how to set up a Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake) based server that offers all services needed by ISPs and hosters (web server (SSL-capable), mail server (with SMTP-AUTH and TLS!), DNS server, FTP server, MySQL server, POP3/IMAP, Quota, Firewall, etc.). www.howtoforge.com/perfect_setup_ubuntu_6.06 |
Interesting Read. I'll be interested in seeing how many people actually use Ubuntu Server in production environments.

If someones business was using the server version, given the paranoia of the business world, are they likely to admit it ?? regards John |
I used ths for my home server as a guide. However, a lot of things I didn't use like quota and so forth (seemed kinda pointless as this just my personal server to serve Dns, webpages and files). Also I added Samba. I was a good read, but I am not too sure how many pro's would be using Ubuntu as their server (or at least admidt it) in a production environment.
Setting up your personal mail/web/ftp server really doesn't count a "production" environment even though most if the software is identical. A. |
excuse my ignorance...
but what is all the fuss about security in Ubuntu?? is it really that insecure? the guy sets a root password in the HowTo... He uses applications that are standard in the Linux server world like Apache, iptables, mysql, and so on. where does the insecurity come in? i'm lost... I use Mandriva 2006 Free right now for my server... and am toying with the idea of switching to ubuntu... that is why i'm interested. |
