How to use synaptic "smart upgrade or "apt-get dist-upgrade"

I have just started to use Ubuntu and have done some updating and added a few things but then got this message:

It is not possible to upgrade all packages.

This means that besides the actual upgrade of the packages some further action (such as installing or removing packages) is required. Please use Synaptic "Smart Upgrade" or "apt-get dist-upgrade" to fix the situation.

The following packages are not upgraded.
linux-image-k7
linux-restricted-modules-k7

What do I need to do now?

Hi

Have a look at the following, it explains in section 3.4 apt-get upgrade
In section 3.5 it explains apt-get dist-upgrade

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/ap...s-dist-upgrade
