How to turn on system notification sounds

I am a newbie to Ubuntu,

I would like to know how I can turn on the system notification sounds (the litte sounds whenever I close a window, open a window etc.)

I knew how to do that in SUSE but how do I do it in Ubuntu?

Methinks they would be dependent on your desktop environment. In Gnome for example there is the command 'gnome-control-center' which brings up the Gnome control panel, and all it's little tools for enabling things.
