How to restart & check status of ssh server

A few weeks ago, I set up an ssh server on my Ubuntu machine. It worked perfectly. Unfortunately, I'm not an expert at this stuff, and I forgot how to start, stop, restart & check the status of the server from the command line. Can anyone help me out with the commands?

/etc/init.d/ssh <enter>

This should display usage information.

ps -ef |grep "sshd"
this will give you the sshd server process info

I come to ubuntu from fedora, and old habits die hard. I got used to having the command "service" to start, restart, etc. If you try that at the command line, ubuntu will give you a couple of system5 packages you need to install, and after that, whee! service works as expected.
