works quite well also. Just wondering? Why not use synaptic to remove LXDE. Answer pan64 question 1st though before listening to me.
< removed because of misinterpretation >
Here is Hoping you have another desktop environment or Window Manager to login into after using my suggestion.
Unless you are going for just a cli environment.
To pan64:
What I want is simple. I want genome ubuntu desktop back, like before I accidently installed lubuntu.
And since rokytnji mentioned, I actually adopted the suggestion in that link. It didn't come out well. Then I found it was only for ubuntu 12.04.
To BW-userx, hydrurga:
I don't have a back up. I don't really know how lubuntu-desktop works diffent with ubuntu-desktop and co-exists with ubuntu-desktop.
Your system may be in a bit of disarray now, so if I were you then personally I would do a full reinstall of Ubuntu (the default Gnome version) that you're looking for. In general, you have to be careful installing non-default desktop environments in Ubuntu, and with many other distros for that matter. It is usually preferable to install the specific distro flavour from scratch that has been designed with the desktop environment that you want e.g. Ubuntu MATE, Lubuntu etc. If you want to test out another desktop environment then you can do so in a live distro that doesn't effect your current system.
If you do decide to install another desktop environment on your current system, it is also a good to make a system image before you do so, so that you can roll back if things go awry.
I just installed genome, and chose genome as my default desktop environment @pan64.
But nothing changed. I assumed I made a wrong choice and wanna choose the other one, but the selection box never popped out again. Even though I uninstall gnome and install it again.
So far, I tried to uninstall lxde but failed because the machine show "lxde is not installed". Same thing happened to "lubuntu-desktop".
What hydrurga said describes my awkward situation. Unfortunately I don't have a back up or image of the system. Good advice though. But isn't there any way to save my machine from this place?
I don't know how did you install gnome, how did you try to set it as default. You need not unsinstall lxde. Would be nice to give more details about what did you (really) execute.
And since rokytnji mentioned, I actually adopted the suggestion in that link. It didn't come out well. Then I found it was only for ubuntu 12.04.
That link was just a example. To explain there is a lot to removing LXDE. I posted how to find the correct names and packages using apt-search and locate commands.
But I guess that was ignored. Forum explanations need to be typed out in novels lately with every little thing one cannot remember to include because one is not a mind reader < on both sides of the internet in a forum setting >. So? I got broad shoulders. I'll take the blame. I should have left out the link. I'll edit my previous post. But.
I could do what what was posted. But. To explain it on a forum to a clueless linux user. It will just give me more grey hair.
They are probably in the process of breaking their install anyways also. I would probably take some blame if I posted in it.
After they try what they are suggesting as their experiment.
Good luck with what ever you do.
So. Looking a gift horse in the mouth. Sometimes makes them run off.
as @hydrurga said in post 8
I've found the safest way to get a backup window manager, like fluxbox or WindowMaker installed, even openbox. They tend to run on everything (i've tried, anyways). If you have room just keep the "default" Desktop, and install another one, then just use that one instead.
With Ubuntuttutu. MAYBE some configuration files will need to be modded to fix their saturated DeskTop from over taking the other one in strange ways, (it's not to big of a deal so do not let that scare you out of it), depending on what that other DT/WM is that you install to use other than what is already there.
You can have more than one WindowManager/Desktop installed to use. It will save you time in trying to figure out what to get rid of before figuring out what to use next instead of the one you have.
