how to login as root

okay, i think i've finally installed ubuntu on my ps3 (i think im the first in the world who has done it on the ps3 hdd without external storage).

http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showt...262#post862262

now when i went through the setup it really didnt ask me for a root password (at least i think it didnt). and now when i've rebooted i get to the login screen and it wouldnt let me log in as root.

now i read over the net that root is disabled in debian, and that there are ways to enable it. ive tried all of them and none of them work. i tried editing the passwd file and adding a user there; or changing root's password from "*" to an actual password or blank. still couldnt log on. i tried also editing the /grp/grp.config. nada. i tried typing passwd root and nope.

they all say permission denied (i did su from fedora's kboot prompt).

anyway out of this or should i reinstall?

Here is the answer from the Ubuntu forum. You can enable the root, although they don't recommend it. I did on my system. I take resposibility if I screw it up. Any way, the link, how to use 'sudo' and the root enabling.

Code:
sudo passwd root
Then follow the prompts. Once complete you can login as root.

If I need root access, I just type "sudo su -", enter my password, and am then logged in as root, with roots $PATH and $HOME.

thanks for the replies, guys. but i tried all that and it just says permission denied.

i did a reinstall, the problem now is that my ubuntu doesnt load on kboot. i have to chroot into it and login from there instead of it automatically loading on boot. i checked the kboot.conf and fstab and they seem to check out.
