I've never installed Ubuntu, but I might be able to help a little. When you say you "can't install ... Ubuntu" do you mean that it wont install because it can't find the hard drive? (with most installers, this is pretty obvious if it is your problem)

First, you will need to locate the appropriate module (driver) for your sata controller. What is the make and model of your controller? (You may need to examine the card/motherboard and look for an sata chip). Check the HCL (top of the page); it might be able to help you there. Also check Google. There may be other tricks too, such as ones involving a live CD.

When installing, most installers run linux (big surprise). Some of them will have open tty's that you can switch to, and manipulate the system. This is sometimes useful for loading modules that the installer isn't smart enough to load on it's own.

Good luck. Whether successful or not, post back and let us know.

Hello, I'm a new linux user, been wanting to switch over but hindered by technical difficulties..

I face the same person as the OP but Live CD works for me. I'm able to install Ubuntu 7.10 using LiveCD on my SATA HDD.
But.. haha.. I'm unable to boot into my SATA HDD. I'm using Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 Rev1.0 motherboard.
How can i allow my mb to boot into SATA HDD?
Do i have install the SATA controller? How do i do it without an OS? Can i do it during the LiveCD installation? Also, how do I Q-Flash my BIOS? Gigabyte.tw only has instructions for WindowsOS =(
Hehe.. that's alot of questions.. Thankz in advance for your help =)

For RAID installations you will need the alternate install CD.
