How to install real player

I have been wrestling with this for 2 days. I can't seem to load a video player.
It either balks or crashes. My system is new and 64 bit...might that be the problem?
Code:

mattjhayes@mattjhayes-Lemur:~$  wget http://client-software.real.com/free/unix/RealPlayer11GOLD.deb
--2015-09-02 14:43:24--  http://client-software.real.com/free/unix/RealPlayer11GOLD.deb

Saving to: ‘RealPlayer11GOLD.deb’

RealPlayer11GOLD.de 100%[=====================>]  8.03M  210KB/s  in 34s

mattjhayes@mattjhayes-Lemur:~$

Above code got the player alright but installing it proves difficult.
I know just enough code to make me dangerous so if you choose to help remember that.

RealPlayer : Probably no updates for at least 5 years.
The package RealPlayer11GOLD.deb : All files have a time stamp year 2010.

The versatile player is mplayer :
$ sudo apt-get install gnome-mplayer
Or KDE : $ sudo apt-get install kmplayer

If you really want the old RealPlayer : Please specify Ubuntu version.

Many thanks for your help. I might add that besides being dangerous I'm 80 Yrs. old and just a tad forgetful.
I copied/pasted the code you recommended and this was the response:

mattjhayes@mattjhayes-Lemur:~$ sudo apt-get install gnome-mplayer
[sudo] password for mattjhayes:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
mattjhayes@mattjhayes-Lemur:~$ ^C
mattjhayes@mattjhayes-Lemur:~$

Could be the automatic update-check that runs ? ( Just wait till it finishes.)
Or you forgot to close Synaptic ? ( Or another `Package Manager'.)

Waiting didn't help.
I don't believe synaptic etc. was running but just to make sure, I re-booted the system and tried again.
Lo & behold it began installing the Real Player but it hung up at the end due to a permission agreement using microsoft fonts.

Package configuration

Configuring ttf-mscorefonts-installer

<Ok>

The system hangs at this juncture.

I don't know that this is your problem but, any time I have installed the ttf-mscorefonts, the default was set to Cancel so you need to make sure that Ok is highlighted. Might be better off trying some other media player though.

why are you trying to install the 5 year out of date "real-player"
it is not likely to even run , even after forcing a install

and those old and out of date fonts"ttf-mscorefonts"
are likely already installed and a newer version, a version that dose not need the OLD microsoft agreement

use Mplayer and VLC

but mplayer and VLC are the only two video programs you will need

RealPlayer ceased Linux support quite a while ago and the Helix Player, which was the basis for RealPlayer Linux, went kaput about the same time.

To the best of my knowledge, that RealPlayer package is 32-bit and will not install on a 64-bit system. I know. I've tried, because one of my favorite OTR (old time radio) websites was in real format only. Now come to find that site is also kaput.

Thanks all.
I have trashed real player etc.
"mplayer and VLC" are the only two video programs you will need. Assuming that this advice is sound, 2 questions: will it boot with 64bit machine? ; where can I get it?

All,
Thank you for all your advice, this is a great site!
I found and downloaded M-player and now I just need to get it to work.
Any tips would be warmly welcomed...(:-)

I use VLC for almost everything, although I do like XMMS for audio because I can use my extensive library of Winamp skins on it.

Slackware still includes XMMS; I'm working on compiling XMMS on other systems, but, so far, no luck. There's a missing piece I haven't found yet.

If it won't play on VLC, it probably won't play on Linux.

Which application?

I have been trying to download Mahjong game Pck. from Ubuntu.
I am directed to the Ubuntu Site at the Ubuntu Software Center.
The game Pkg.is availabe and a message window named "Launch Application" instructs me: "This needs to opened with an
application!"

I then find myself at my desk. I haven't a clue which application is meant??? I am then to send this to Ubuntu Software Center.

Re #14.

Mahjong : May be you mean mahjongg ?

"mahjongg" games, Ubuntu :
gnome-mahjongg, kmahjongg, xmahjongg

? Which file did you "download" ? May be you got some on-line game ?
Any reason for not using apt ? $ apt-get install xmahjongg
Etc. etc.
