How to capture recorded video files from DirecTV hard drive.....?

I was wondering if there was a way to capture recorded programs off a DirecTV hard drive and transfer them over to your PC.

I tried moving the Western Digital 80GB HD over to my PC and attached with IDE cable and connected the power cable, however, when I boot-up ubuntu does not see it.

I even tried buying an enclosure and tried that using a USB and Ubuntu does not see it.

I noticed that Windows-7 sees its there (the Western Digital HD ) via USB, however the PC Windows-7 does see the HD either, meaning, it does not allow me to enter the HD.

Does anyone know if there is a way to grab some of the recorded files off that DirecTv Western Digital HD...?

At a guess I'd say the drive is probably encrypted.
I may be easier to look for a capture solution from the hdmi output of the box.

It may not be encrypted, though that is likely, it is also probably in some particular format that would require, at least a TV reciever type card I would think.

Thus far I had no success. I did replace the HD into the Phillips box and connected the Phillips box to my PC , and played it through my PC tuner, but that doesn't count.

Someone told me to try Parted-Magic, but seriously, I got tired of trying to figure it out over 3 days.

It was a great learning process.

I thought I would be able to see and grab the file, but that was not the case...
