If I have ubuntu installed on some machine, how can I burn the ubuntu image that is on that machine onto a DVD so I can install that exact image onto a new machine?

I would use a package called partimage, to create an image of the partition, then create a custom system rescue cd System Rescue CD Home. Take a look at this page for more info on doing exactly what you describe: http://www.sysresccd.org/Sysresccd-m....28optional.29. Hope that helps!
