How should I get a server?
hi, everybody:
I've installed the Ubuntu Desktop, and now I wanted to use my PC as a server. I have no idea whether I should add all services one by one , or apt-get install a server?
Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

What sort of server do you want to run?
You can install server programs using aptitude (better than apt-get).
For example, if you want a web-server then run "sudo aptitude install apache2".

Probably not quite the answer that you're looking for but install Ubuntu server edition instead of Ubuntu Desktop.

There is a much simpler and fool proof way. Open Synaptic, select "Edit" then "Mark packages by task...". Check the ones you want. LAMP server will give you apache, mysql and some other parts associated to serving Internet applications. If you want a file server, NFS or Samba, go to the upper applet bar and select System-> Administration-> Shared Folders. Ubuntu will offer to install whatever you need. Those are the ones most frequently used.
