Question How set default keyboard layout?

I have installed ubuntu 7.04 - living in Canada I want my PC in French. Problem, ubuntu thinks I have an AZERTY keyboard. I have no problem setting keyboard choices for each user - and that's fine AFTER login. My problem is how to set the default keyboard layout so my Canadian keyboard is recognized at the login screen. This affects the typing of logins and passwords.

Thanks, your info helped - and I've learned a bit more about what I need to learn more about.

Unfortunately, after changing xorg.conf and rebooting I logged in and got an error message noting that X and Gnome keyboard settings did not agree - so I chose X - wrong! I should have guessed that the change had not yet been correctly made. Now I have only the "fr" setting.

Not to worry, I had installed from an alternate install CD (after some problems had arisen following to successive ubuntu upgrades). I will now do a fresh install from a 'normal' ubuntu 7.04 install CD and am confident I shall be able to set my region and keyboard without difficulty.

Still, many thanks for the info.
