how does usb automounting work?

I have recently switched from Debian to Ubuntu and I want to know how Ubuntu does automatic mounting of USB drives. I am running KDE 3.5 and when I plug in a flash drive, an icon for it automatically appears and it is opened automatically in Konqueror. I created a new user account and the auto-mounting doesn't work for the new user. Previously, in Debian I had to create an entry for the flash drive in /etc/fstab and give users permission to mount it. I did that and now the other user can mount, but I want to know how the automatic mounting works. I can't find any documentation for it from Ubuntu.

Maybe this link will help to get it to automount.

It's based on debian to automount but should work with Ubuntu. I haven't tried it but will try it.
