How do I turn off the system beep?

I've a Dell D400 with Ubuntu 5.1 and I hate the system beep. When using firefox and searching a document and it doesn't find it the system beeps. I hate that! lol Any way to get rid of it?

You can always open the box and unplug the speaker. That will surely shut it up ;-)

Haha, I like the idea... Is it a different speaker than my audio?

Should be. There should be a mini speaker that plugs directly into the motherboard in the same spot where you plug in your fan controler and such. If not things like the system beep, and keyboard clicks, can usually be turned off in the BIOS as well. So check there too if you can't undo the hardware.

Heh, I'd much rather take the software approach. ;) Thanks I'll check that out when I get to that machine.

Module excision will eliminate the beep.
