how do i setup a NAS?

Hi.
I got a machine running ubuntu 6.10 and i would like to turn that into a NAS and have other machines to access it to get and store files. The other machines run Ubuntu 6.10 (10 of them) and the rest of the machines run MS windows XP pro (10 machines).
My question is what do i have to do to make it available to the rest of the machines. Here is the network structure. All of the machine are connected to a switch including the future-NAS machine. It is a simple SOHO setup without any active directory or any other complicating features.
My question is how do i setup the NAS and how do i access it from the machines (Ubuntu and Windows)?

for windows you will most likely want to use SAMBA, for ubuntu you could use NFS or use samba as well.

You could also look into a dedicated NAS distribution like Openfiler or SME Server. These will take the headache out of setting it up.

thanks a lot for the answers. i would prefer to stay with ubuntu for reasons that that i run some programms already and i do not want to reinstall them. Lets forget the linux boxes for a while since i am only interested in the windows machine to set them up to work with the ubuntu box. i have a user in ubuntu called binary with passwd 12345. i create a folder and then share it to the LAN. then i go to the windows machines and all i see is in the my network places a machine called ubuntu... it asks for username and password all the time. then i create a user in a windows machine called binary with passwd 12345 (exactly the same as in the ubuntu). still no luck. the ip of the ubuntu box is 192.168.1.65 the first windows box is 192.168.1.66 with the same gateway.
any ideas what i am doing wrong?
