ubuntu uses sudo for everything....

Code:
 sudo passwd
will set your root password.

Drat. I didn't realize that sudo wouldn't ask for the root password. This may only be for the 1st normal user. Ignore my pre-edited advice.

You will need your root password for lots of things! Most distros make you set a root password during installation but ubuntu works a little differently.

It's explained here: http://www.ubuntux.org/how-to-change...word-in-ubuntu

You don't need a root password in Ubuntu.

Just use sudo or gksudo for any administrative tasks you need to accomplish.
