Red face How do i install Openoffice/apps from a Ubuntu 8.0 OS CD

Dear all,

I have installed Ubuntu Studio 8.0, I want to install Openoffice writer, calc, Presentations, help files and other apps from the Ubuntu 8.0 - hardy CD. I added the CDROM in synaptic package manager, but i was not able to install from the CD.

I have also checked the option to install from CD in software sources.

Can i install openoffice without downloading it from the internet? can i do this from the CD?
'
Can i use dpkg/aptitude, i tried all this but couldn't access the packages in the cd.

Thanks
Avinash

I have taken a brief peek at ubuntu studio.
It appears that it is focused on multimedia applications rather than on office applications.

If openoffice is not on your apps listing from your cd, you will have to install it from one of the ubuntu mirrors and that means downloading.

The package from the openoffice website measures appr. 166MB, and I guess that an install from an ubuntu mirror will take about the same amount to download.

Wish you luck!

I'm guessing the reason he doesn't want to download it, is either because he's on dial up, or that machine has no internet connection..

I guess that he has a dial-up connection, because he posted a question.

Guys,

I have good broadband connection and i can download it without any problems, but i am wondering why i should download everytime. This is my second ubuntu studio installation in the network and i guess its silly to download 200MB of data everytime just to install openoffice.

I am wondering if there's an option to install it from the Ubuntu 8.0 - hardy OS CD?? Or i have another Ubuntu studio machine, will the downloaded files be in the HDD?

Regards,
Avinash

Looks like we were both wrong..

Its not out of the realm of norm though, for one machine to have an internet connection, and another not to.

As for his question, I really don't know. I think the entire OO.org suite is installed w/ the Ubuntu CD. Or I install it.. not sure which.. whichever it is, it doesn't effect me to badly.

Yes, you are right the entire Openoffice is installed when you install ubuntu 8.0 Desktop edition, but this doesn't happen when you install Ubuntu Studio!!!

And, all the machine have internet connection! that doesn't mean you download openoffice 10times coz you installed Ubuntu Studio on 10machines!!

Well, do one of two things..

1. Take a paxil, and install regular Ubuntu.

2. Take a Paxil, and download Open Office.

Forget the Paxil, you'll be incompetent to drive a car or to control a computer.

I don't see the point of your question. What is there against downloading a software package and to store it onto your harddrive?

If your computers are connected with a lan you'll be able to move this package around freely from one computer to another to install it anywhere.

So you don't have to download it more than once.

My daily download figures exceed the 166MB with a factor 30...

Open a terminal.
Enter: sudo apt-get install openoffice.org

If apt-get responds:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package openoffice.org
,

...then you must download it.

Question answered!

I did apt-get, and it starts downloading.
apt-get is configured to access the internet and download packages. Its surprising there is no option to install applications from the CDROM.

Please open a terminal and go to /etc/apt. Then enter the command: more sources.list
This should result in a list like this:

Code:
#more sources.list
# deb cdrom:[Kubuntu 8.04 _Hardy Heron_ - Release i386 (20080423)]/ hardy main restricted

This is the so-called repository list. Here is defined which sources for packages you actually have.
Lines beginning with a '#' are comments. If you remove the # the source will be activated.
By adding a # at the beginning of the line the source will be deactivated.
If you are familiar with vi you can edit your sources.list. But before doing this always save a copy of this file, then you have a backup in case things go wrong.
You must become root the do this. I find it easier to have a permanent root-shell using sudo -i
Now to find out why openoffice.org is downloaded instead it is being installed from your cdrom you can do the following: deactivate all sources except the cdrom by adding a # at the start of each source line.

If you have finished this enter the command: apt-get install openoffice.org.

After you have finished reading this novel I wish you good luck!
