How do i access my PDA/Mobile through USB/bluetooth on Ubuntu 8.04

Dear all,

I am using Ubuntu 8.04-Hardy on Acer Aspire 3620. I am not able to use my bluetooth at all. The Bluetooth LED just doesn't glow but the bluetooth services are all starting without any problems.

Alternatively, i installed Multi-sync from Add/Remove option and connected my HTC mobile device using a USB cable, but the OS doesn't detect the device at all.

Can anybody help me with this?

Thanks,
Avinash

Is your phone detected when you put it in discovery mode? Can your phone detect the computer when put in discovery mode?

No it doesn't, when i enable bluetooth on my PDA, there is an option to search for devices and it doesn't detect the bluetooth in the laptop. The bluetooth device is enabled in the laptop BIOS.

I am able to connect to different mobile devices through bluetooth but not the laptop.

Let's see if you can make a manual connection to your PDA.

Try this:

1. Put make sure your PDA is in Discover or Visible mode.

2. From the commandline type: hcitool scan. If successfull you should see the mac address of your PDA, make a note of it.

3. Type: rfcomm connect 0 xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx 6 (replace xx with your PDA's mac address) (The 6 is to connect in data exchange mode).

Install the "blueman" package. It provide a GUI for the entire pairing process. On your phone you may have to enable bluetooth pairing as many phones have a timer that automatically disables phone pairing after a fixed period of time.

The Bluetooth service is started

avi@human:~$ ps -ef | grep bluetooth
root 5240 5224 0 09:49 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd-service-audio
root 5241 5224 0 09:49 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd-service-input
avi 5615 5395 0 09:49 ? 00:00:00 bluetooth-applet --singleton
root 5788 5224 0 09:49 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd-service-network
root 5798 5224 0 09:49 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd-service-serial
avi 5841 5803 0 09:50 pts/0 00:00:00 grep bluetooth

The Bluetooth device LED still doesn't glow.

Output of hcitool scan
avi@human:~$ hcitool scan
Device is not available: No such device
avi@human:~$

I had checked all this before. The Bluetooth device was working perfectly under windows.

Have you installed the blueman package suggested by fragos? It will give you more control over your bluetooth. See install instructions here: http://blueman.tuxfamily.org/index.p...d=51&Itemid=56

The bluetooth Led is likely controlled by the driver. Even with the same bluetooth chip set the interface to the LED may differ between laptops. If you right click the bluetooth icon in the applet bar and select preferences a working adapter will be indicated as are any bonded devices. If you run blueman the "My Device" tells you about your adapter.

If your adapter is a USB dongle "lsusb" will show all the USB ports and connected devices. Otherwise the bluetooth adapter is a PCI device. In that case "lspci" will all PCI devices and usually for wireless tells you what chip set is used. Note that a device may be recognized even if there isn't an appropriate driver for that device. My bluetooth is a TRENDnet USB dongle.
