How can I get apps (eg, NM and SCIM) to run globally
Hi, I'm new to Linux and am running Ubuntu 9.1 and I like it (it runs fine) except I'm having problems running apps like NetworkManager and SCIM outside my own login.
I've got all the applications up and running but when logging into other accounts on the computer (eg, my wifes) there is no sign of NetworkManager or SCIM (I can launch SCIM by typing 'sudo SCIM -d' in a console and it then appears but doesn't work).
So the question is, how can I get NM, SCIM, etc to run globally throughout everyones login?
You need to install the apps as the root user. Use Synaptic, and log in with the root password. Then the apps should be available to every user.
This might mean you need to uninstall the ones that work just for you, and re-install. If you have any data associated with an app, make backups of the data files before you proceed.

I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling SCIM as a root user but still I can change the language on my login and now root login but not the other users.
When I first read this post, I though it was the applications that would not launch. When I read your last post, (#3), it sounds like the problem is with SCIM interfacing with the application. I have no experience with SCIM, so I can not help much there. I did some googling, and came across this link -->http://www.mrbass.org/linux/ubuntu/scim/

Have a look there and see if that helps.
You didn't know the answer but went and Googled it for me - I'm touched!
Thanks a lot. I'll have a look at the link tomorrow and let you know how I got on.
