Question How can I disable automatic booting into X windows on Ubuntu?

If I were using any other linux - I would simply disable gdm. But Ubuntu is a strange beast as the user is protected from having to tinker with configurations. Anyway, my preference is to boot to a console and when i need Xwindows unity / gnome shell (what ever it really is now ) i would like to simply type 'startx'.

How can i do this in Ubuntu 12.04?

Many thanks

Well, removing all display managers sort of did the trick - except I had to switch to tty2 to log in, and I dont seem to have sound in my X session
