How can I create a website on Linux Ubuntu?

First of all, know the fundamentals and confine the tools:

HTML/CSS and I will add Javascript as a must

Choose a server side language(Any One)
I myself am oriented towards Python but PHP is quite easy to begin and these days the trend is towards ruby on rails.
PHP
Ruby
Python

Choose Database:
I recommend SQLite for learning but keep an eye on MySQL as well.

MySQL(Most Famous)
PostgreSQL
SQLite(lightweight and without server)
NoSQL

Choose a famous and well-backed framework for the chosen language:

For PHP (ZendFramework, Symphony, Kohana etc)
For Python (Django, web2py etc)
For Ruby (Rails)

Go through their documentation and tutorials. understand all the working rules and ways (especially MVC). Try "Hello World" of website World i.e. building a blog in 20/25 minutes with chosen framework which they have on their websites. I know Django does.

Now choose an editor/IDE(Any One)

Netbeans, Aptana, bluefish, eclipse, gedit, geany, vim, emacs etc. Some can be installed from software center and some should be downloaded from respective websites.

Install required packages;

Some of the above-mentioned packages as well languages can be installed from repositories install it. Others may need to be downloaded and installed from their respective source.

If you require a server i.e. in a case of PHP install it. Apache Or Nginx is quite famous HTTP server that supports all of the above languages. Apache is quite easy to setup.

I recommend setting up a user-dir if you installed Apache so that you can access it a localhost/~USERNAME which looks for a file in your HOMEDIRECTORY/public_html folder. This folder can be used for all your websites and projects during development.

If you know/chose PHP, look into https://help.ubuntu.com/communit...

P.S. These days javascript can be used as server side language as well and Node.js is used for such purpose

Thanks for sharing your ideas!

As your post is not in the form of a question appropriate to the programming forum, but is more an Ubuntu how-to, I am moving this thread to the Ubuntu forum where it will get better exposure to the intended audience.

I would also encourage you to make use of your blog space here on LQ for posting How-Tos and other information you wish to share, which does not conform to the posting guidelines which apply in the question oriented forums.

Ok. You might add perl to the P mix there since that was the original P in LAMP before PHP and Python were added. CPAN has a great many very useful modules that are quick to integrate and deploy.

I just want to share that I made a website using Linux before. Linux is really easy to use and has excellent tools for Programming. If you need any reference in creating a website, you can check this one: Petstreetmall. It's actually designed for pet supplies.
