Home folder opens media players??
 

Hi,
I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10. There are a few teething problems, however the one that is annoying me the most is the one when i click on the 'home' icon to go to my home directory it seems to open my media players (first it was audacious, so i removed it then it opens mplayer).

When I make a shortcut for it, the command is file:///home/icedfusion

anyone know how I can change the 'executable' mapping so that it does what its supposed to?

Sounds like maybe something wonky happened with your latest-copied iso of 8.10. Was it a new install process or a simple upgrade process? The complete new install route is usually less risky. One of the nice learning features of Ubuntu (and I'm not speaking from the standpoint of being a 10 yr vet) is, that with the somewhat regular version upgrades to the operating system, it soon becomes much less daunting to just dump everything, while saving your personal stuff and just reload everything. It hardly takes any time at all. If you have the excess drive capacity to keep your old Ubuntu system still operating, this is good insurance, that three weeks down the road you won't find you've deleted something you had forgotten about. Sounds to me like something in your OS is confused if its mistaking your /home dir for your media progs. I defer to those wiser, but I think you're probably better off just reloading the OS and starting from scratch, as it appears you've just loaded it in the last short while anyway. Cheers.

I have indeed just gone the upgrade path. Unfortunately, just 'backing' up my stuff is not easily done (around 1TB of stuff). However, I suppose one route I could go down is to back everything up I don't want to loose and reinstall (I put my /home) dir on a separate drive, so maybe just reinstalling the OS could be feasible?
Another reason not to just do a full install is having to go round and tweak all the config files again, setting up sshfs, smb etc - all a pain really. However, if I can't fix this issue I will probably do a complete fresh install.
