Here's help for CE users who are struggling with Dansguardian

Well, after a good week or so, I've found solutions for all of us.
And there are many of us who've been frustrated, which is why you now have three options available to you:

OPTION ONE: CE 2.1 has now been released, which features a gui disablement and easier management, not to mention a new windows-like desktop format for those who are coming over from windows. You'll find a start button at the bottom left and everything is arranged as it was with windows.

You can get the download here:
http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.co.../download.html
You can also choose to upgrade, of course, and there's a torrent there as well if you'd like to use it.

Or you can buy official disks here:
http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.co...icial-cds.html

OPTION TWO:
You can simply update your Dansguardian to the new version that allows easier configurement or disablement.

Get it here:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=355935

OPTION THREE: Or, if you simply want to prevent Dansguardian from blocking every type of file known to man, you can click that button on your configuring tools and place a hash mark # in front of any file type you don't want blocked. You can do this with the MIME button as well:

For CE 2.0 Users, that's at the top left of your screen: system> administration> configure parental controls. CE 2.1 users, at the bottom left of your screen: start>system administration>configure parental controls.

God's richest blessings to you.

Thank you to CE developers for making this wonderful operating system so much easier to use!

I ran the "convert_me" script (yes, it's catchy!) from a freshly upgraded working 7.04. I found it to complete, and firefox shows a sea change, and I see the 2.1 form "start button" menu post widget, but there functionality ends.
I get a crash if I try to run System->configure-parental-controls, and I cannot install esword, which I have liked even though I had to run windows to use it. (Easily the best windows ap I've ever used.) I then tried (successfully) to kill the dansguardian processes using gnome-system-monitor (rather easier just doing ps -Af|grep dansguardian, then killing the head.) Then I tried running "install esword" from the menu again, but still only see the dialog warning of dansgaurdian. I cannot see that any process launches. By the way, it is very difficult with these menus to find out just what is launched! It would have been easier if I could have investigated the script that it was supposed to start.
I would like to stay with the ce, but if I am forced to use dansguardian (parental controls: my children are 25 and 30, and have their own computers) and clam av, I am thinking of returning to ubuntu gnome proper, and trying it with wine.
A side issue: inittab in ubuntu derived distros. What gives? How do I set the default runlevel? What if I don't always want gdm and X?
Thanks for your help

I had lots of problems with the Feisty release. When I used my update manager to upgrade to Feisty it aborted and then I couldn't go online. Something about the proxy server refusing connections after that. But if I download the whole package, Feisty plus CE, the resolution is messed up. But I don't think that's CE. So that leads to the manual setting of the screen resolution. So, I just went back to my trusty CE 2.2 Edgy Eft, and I'll wait for Gutsy Gibbon to come out. Maybe it will be better. If you download it for a clean install with the CE, it should work pretty well, at least mine did. I never have a good experience with upgrades or add-ons for some reason, and I have no more time to deal with it. So, back to Edgy. I wish they still had the download link for that. But if you know how to set the resolution from the command line, you might be better off backing up your data and getting the new CE download here:
