Help! Root Password Problems
For a while now, I've had Kubuntu installed, and it runs nicely except for root access.
I can su to root in the command line with no problem, but I can not, for the life of me get get root access when a "run as root" box comes up. I can enter the same password as the one I typed into the command line and it will say "password incorrect"
So my first inclination is to go into the user settings and play with root access and all that good stuff ...but I need to have root powers to do that, too.
So, then I tried logging in as root at the login screen, but it won't let me do that either.
My question is.... how in the heck do I fix this without re-installing Linux?
Thanks Much
Matt

so if im understanding this correctly, you can access root privileges only in terminal, but when something that requires root comes up the password is rejected?
my first thought is thats unusual. are you sure you're typing the same password?
try changing root password and see if problem persists.

So, I'll try to change the password through in the command line the next time I boot up in Linux (I mostly live in Window$ XP).
If that doesn't work, how do I change the user privileges in the command line?

i guess u better try
sudo passwd root yournewpassword
sudo passwd newpass
gave me the answer: there is no user newpass
you can edit the priviliges for a file, directory, script,...
with
chmod
see
man chmod

and do not ask for the same passwords. asks for the root password and (provided you're in the admin group) asks for your user password. Read more here:
