HELP. Kernel from scratch. and I mean scratch

Hi all, I want to build a new kernel on Ubuntu. I downloaded kernel source blah blah blah. when I enter menuconfig it allready has a generic config. I DONT WANT IT.IT's DRIVING ME MAD. If I wanted a generic kernel I wouldn't be building a custom kernel. There is no .config file so where is it getting this info from. I've tried make mrproper, make clean, make dep clean ......... but no luck, every time I enter menuconfig it has a generic config. Do i really have to go through everything in the kernel, taking it out.

Thx in Advance.

when you run make menuconfig it always loads up /linux-2.6.xx.x/arch/i386/defconfig, which is a default configuration for your arch, it should be no problem to modify that to your liking and when you exit menuconfig it will prompt you to save which will save it in your kernel source directory as .config then run make, after it builds run make modules_install, copy and bzImage to boot and update your grub menu.1st, reboot and if you did everything correctly it should boot up with all your perifrials working...

There are some options to menuconfig like 'oldconfig' and some more. One should do what you want but you'll have to google it - me no remember.

Done it !!!

Found it was pulling in old config from boot folder, so i deleted it . in my case /boot/config-2.6.20-15-generic. Now when I run make menuconfig. It doesn't have every device enabled.
