HELP: How To Install Chinese Input Group In Ubuntu
 

Hello, I am quite a newbie in linux world, just touched it probably for two weeks only. Quite interesting thing to learn...may be too used to MSWindows that can't find anything too exiting in it...

I am from China, and I am trying to install the Chinese Input Group, however, I couldn't really found it. I have tried to install whatever related to Chinese in the Synamptic,and swith to the chinese language pack, also never work.

Can any senior help me out of this problem? thanks a lot

Ni Hao!

From your post I assume you are trying to get Chinese input working? If so, then you need to follow these (fairly simple) steps :-

1) at a terminal window prompt type "sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales" and select any of the locales that begin with "zh" (e.g. zh_CN.UTF-8 is the most important one for you in China). Press OK when finfished and your system locales will be updated to include Chinese.

2) with Synaptic you can install the following packages :

scim
scim-chinese
scim-config-gconf
scim-config-socket
scim-frontend-socket
scim-gtk2-immodule
scim-server-socket
scim-tables-zh
xfonts-intl-chinese

I am not sure if some of these packages are optional (the xfonts package is though), however my Ubuntu 5.10 system works just fine with the two above steps...

I have tried, but still couldn't get the Chinese group in the group option of the keyboard.

I have found sth. called SCIM Input Method Setup, however, when i click it, it showed "starting up"...and then disappear.

Can you advice me? Thanks it is almost 2:00am in singapore, tomolo got to get up at 7:00, can sleep another 5 hours only , hehe.

If you have followed the steps above, then open Open Office Writer, press CTRL + SPACE (which activates the SCIM toolbar) and select a Chinese input method from the SCIM toolbar and a Chinese font from Office...

That should work...

actually yesterday was my birthday, so i went out for celebration until very late, and then today morning need to go to the other end of Singapore at 9:00, so never got a chance to check out the email, so until today saw yoru reply.

ha ha , as you can see, follow your steps, i can use chinese input already, really thank you~~~

but is it if openoffice not running, this scim won't be able to run either? as i just press ctrl-space doesn't really activate the scim toolbar unless openoffice was running...

but when i quit open office, teh scim actually still runing a~

you should be able to use scim input for most things, try it in your email client, spreadsheet, text editor, whatever you want it should work...

hehe, yeah, i did tried it with Mozila Firebox, i can type chinese in the address bar.
