HDMI on Ubuntu 12

Ok, so I tried to hook my tv up to my computer and when I switched my tv to the input for it, the tv showed that there was a connection (black screen instead of blue) but there was nothing more than that. no video, no audio from it etc. When I unplugged it, the tv went back to blue. what could cause this? I tried to find a thread like this but couldn't find anything like mine. it was all audio not working on hdmi and nothing about video.

The answer may be that we need to know much more about both the computer and the tv.

Try this too if you want. Turn off tv and computer and then connect hdmi. Then power up tv to the hdmi input and then power up computer. This is more of a test rather than a fix just to see what shows. I am hoping that it will just work.

If not then post as suggested or just post specs of the system.

Did you open up the Display Settings page and see if it detected your TV??

Did you try a VGA cable instead of HDMI??

yeah, I tried the vga cable and got external speakers but I'm trying to get it to push out on hdmi so that It will so through the tv speakers instead of needing external speakers. and I'll have to get back to you on whether or not it detects the tv. I'm pretty sure it does though.
