having trouble setting up wireless internet
 

I have tried to compile Network Manager and get an error :"Wireless-tools => 28pre9 not installed or not functional"

I have also tried to install it directly and got an nm-applet error.
I do have access to the internet on the XP partition and have been downloading things and moving them to the Ubuntu partition. That is how I got the Newtwork Manager in the first place. I looked up my wireless card and it is supported.
I am a beginner would someone spend some time with me and troubleshoot this problem? I would greatly appreciate it. I need some detailed step by step instructions of what to install, how and what I need to do with it.

This ordinarily wouldn't be the best way to do it, but as you are new, it will certainly be the fastest and easiest. Download the iso for the latest version of whatever flavor of ubuntu you prefer. That would be edgy at the moment, soon to be fawn. Burn it. Reboot. Then just re-install. Bam. It's all done for you, pain free. No crazy command line kung-fu. Make sure you back up your data. :)

Before anyone can help you they will need to know what card you have.

lspci from command line will tell you what it is. (if it is usb use lsusb).

I dont need ndiswrapper. My card is supported I've already looked and that is stated in my first post. I am currently istalling and this is the problem that I have encountered. Do I really have to install again?

I thought you had to load the driver with ndiswrapper then configure your network with the wireless tools. Maybe I'm wrong?

wireless-tools is a deb package in the Ubuntu repository. Do System-> Administration-> Synaptic Package Manager. Using the search button find "wireless-tools" and install or reinstall. Click the box before the name and a list of options will pop down. Once selected use the Apply button. Wireless cards and chip sets come in many varieties and all have different levels and methodology of support. Without telling us what card and chip set you have no one will be able to help you. lspci will provide that information as requested above.

Perhaps I misunderstood, but I thought he had acquired a new network card, and needed network manager installed to manage it. Which is difficult to install if you have no internet connection at the moment. It's been a while since I installed Kubuntu on my laptop, but the install process installed and configured everything for me. Which was the point of my post, I guess. With a new install, if the new card is supported as he says, the install process should handle all the messy details. It did for me at least, and I just bought the cheapest belkin pmcia card I could find at staples.

If you are new to linux, that is by far the easiest way to do it. If you have another way to get on the net, then just install it via apt, but if I understand you correctly you don't have another way to get online from within linux.

Sorry if I wasn't much help, but that's how I would handle it. (I'm a lazy S.O.B. though.)

P.S. Is it just me or does it seem like quit a few people don't read the parent post before they propose a solution ? Maybe I'm just confused, which happens often.

P.P.S. Have you tried downloading the .deb and installing it that way ? Rather than from source ? Oh ...by the way, it looks like you need to install a package named "wireless tools", which is most likely a dependency of network manager. Usually apt or aptitude or synaptic (whichever you are using) would handle those dependency details for you, but if you are downloading stuff from XP then copying stuff over to your linux partition, you will have to solve those dependency problems yourself. Installing from a .deb rather than source should be easier, if you can find a .deb to download. Good luck with that. Or if you are lazy enough, you might want to gamble that the installer can handle it. Hope things work out for you.

Your windoze running a problem.

Download an iso of Ubuntu and install directly from the iso. You are running in real problems without a proper install that finds your wireless card for you. Ensure however you are connected via the ethernet in your install.

If this is a problem go to an internet cafe and connect via an internet.

You cannot troubleshoot from a windows partition it is asking everyone to sort your windoze out.

Wireless is really good on Ubuntu so don't pick and mix it does not work.

You should not need ndis driver either old hat now Ubuntu is the leading edge on wireless cards.

Thanks for the input. I tried to plug the internet cord (DSL) directly into my computer thus cutting out the wireless hub and I still dont seem to be connecting to the internet to finish the install.
Any suggestions?
I also don't understand how it could be a windows problem.

My network card is internal. It's Pro/Wireless 2200BG network connection
and without internet I cannot get to the Ubunutu repository.
any other ideas?

How do I find the .deb file to install it?

I'm a cable user but I could swear that DSL uses pppoe which you would need to configure for. I believe the utility to do this is "pppoeconf" and it should be installed with the default system.

What version of Ubuntu are you using ? I think you must be using an older version of ubuntu, because according to this, the drivers for your hardware have been included since dapper at least.

If it's integrated then it should have been installed and configured when you installed ubuntu, but it might not have been if you weren't in range of a wireless network when you installed, but I don't really know, I always make sure I have everything hooked up and turned on during an install, just so the installer handles everything.

Can you tell us what version of ubuntu you are using ? If it is an older version, and you do decide to download another iso, give some thought to linux mint, they take an awful lot of the hard parts of setting up a system off your hands for you. The version of Ubuntu that I installed was edgy 6.10.
and I was in the vicinity of a wireless network when I installed it.
Was there something specific in the synaptic package manager that I can upgrade without the internet that I needed?
I tried downloading wireless tools package that I brought over from my windows partition but it wont install. It is possible that I am not typing the correct command lines. I must remind you that I really am a beginner.

When I typed in pppoeconf. I got the following:
Not connected
"sorry, I scanned 2 interfaces, but the Access concentrator of your provider did not respond. Please check your network and modem cables. Another reason for the scan failure may also be another running pppoe process which controls the modem"

Well, I know that my wireless is working. And the rest of the message I don't understand. Do you have any suggestions?
FYI: My wireless is WPA
It seems that my computer sees my neighbors wireless which is a local elementary school and not locked but does not see mine.
