Gutsy: Wierd Xorg Problem

I don't know if this is a problem with the intel video driver, but often I get a blank screen after logging in from the gdm screen. (I still get the sound clip that tells me that I am logged in.)

Sometimes when this happens, I shut down the computer and restart. Other times, I start a console session <Crtl><Alt><F6> and either issue a halt command, or stop and restart X. Sometimes on restarts, I get a screen full of vertical blue lines instead of the gdm screen.

Everything was working OK after the initial Gutsy install, and I know that there has been restricted driver updates since I installed Gutsy.

I also found that the 1440x900 screen resolution that I select from the preferences tab, which is also in my xorg.conf, is not what my monitor is receiving (according to the monitor).

The only thing that I have messed with is going from no visual effects to normal visual effects. (I just turned off the visual effects to see if this might affect this strange behavior.)

Any thoughts on this?

(If I can spell weird, I would be doing well.)

The intel drivers are not restricted - check with the restricted drivers manager tool.

Use a low resolution. (Also try the vesa driver.) It may be that you need the 915resolution package.

Simon Bridge -> You are correct, the intel video driver is not restricted.

I did turn off the visual effects, however, I still am having the problem described.

I did fail to note that doing a cold boot usually allows me to go through the process to get to my desktop. Why it works sometimes and not other times is a mystery to me.

No one else that uses the same box has this problem. I wonder if the problem is in my gnome settings, or some other settings?

Oh well....

Simon Bridge -> I have had the 915resolution, xserver-xorg-video-i740, xserver-xorg-video-i810, xserver-xorg-video-intel and xserver-xorg-video-psb packages installed since Feisty.

I am currently running at 1280x1024 @ 60Hz. My monitor shows the same information.

I had to cold boot 4 times to be able to get to my desktop.

I changed the resolution to 1440x900 @ 60Hz and everything seems to work correctly now. Weird.
