GUI disappears after update to Intrepid

I just updated to Intrepid, but now whenever I start up Ubuntu, it brings me straight to the CLI instead of the GUI. It has the graphical booting screen, the one that says "Ubuntu" with the orange progress bar underneath, but then it just goes to the CLI.

Hitting Ctrl+Alt+F7 just has a blinking cursor underscore thing... I don't know the technical name for it. It doesn't freeze or anything; I can go right back to tty1 without a problem.

When I type in "startx," it says a lot of things, including the following,

I noticed that when it starts up, it has the following message before the progress bar. It might be nothing, in fact it might have always been there without my noticing.

I tried running aticonfig, and it seemed to go without a problem, but then it didn't change anything.

I'd like to fix this without reinstalling Ubuntu, if possible. Over the last few months I've installed so many programs and tweaked the settings so much that it would be an enormous pain to redo all of that. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I'd really appreciate it.

Nope, nothing different.

If your video driver didn't come from an Ubuntu repository, when you upgrade it won't be upgraded. Drivers only work with a specific version of the kerenel.

So, is there a way to fix it?

I've always found upgrading Ubuntu a thankless exercise - gave up a while ago. For distros that run to a release cycle like Ubuntu, I tend to keep fairly "vanilla" with a separate /home partition; makes re-installs relatively painless. I haven't used ATI for a while so I can't help there either.

As for "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", I found it useless (on Intrepid) on older kit. Seems not to generate anything useful - probably because of evdev. I had to go find an old xorg.conf and use that. However that was on the (late) beta, and early release codebase - things might be better now. Or not.

Perhaps the drivers Ibex would have:

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-radeon

That didn't seem to make any difference, either. I have ati's .run file on a disk, but unfortunately I can't seem to find the command to mount an optical drive. At least, I can't find it written out clearly. I can only find the format, without the specific commands to use. Does anybody happen to know what it is?

Ok, I managed to get it working again. I got the .run file to my hd by using a Sabayon LiveCD and reinstalled the driver through the command line, so now it's working. Thanks for the help!
