GNOME: Tweaking themes.

Where are the theme files located? And how can I manually modify them? (I don't mean going through the theme prefrences dialog box and doing this...)

Hi,

System-wide themes are in /usr/share/themes/

You can put your own in ~/.themes/ (these will not be available to other users of course).

Icons and cursors are in /usr/share/icons

GDM Themes are in /usr/share/gdm/themes/

Is there a place where I can learn all default directories ubuntu creates and what each of them stand for...or why they are there?

Try
ubuntugeek.com
and
ubuntu-tutorials.com

Googling might also help

BTW a good way to edit themes is to copy them into your ~/.themes/ directory (can't do that with GDM themes though), rename it and modify it. Themes are mostly just images and simple text file(s). Use existing themes as a template and work from there.

Your window manager settings tool should allow you to set title bar alignment for many themes. For those that don't look in its rc file. On Xubuntu this is:

/usr/share/themes/theme_name/xfwm4/themerc

and the option is
Code:
title_alignment=left|right|center

You're right, to modify GTK themes (buttons, check boxes, etc) you change
/usr/share/themes/theme_name/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
and what's in
/usr/share/themes/theme_name/metacity-1/
but you asked about setting alignment of the title bar text. Window borders and the window title bar are part of the window manager and not part of the application itself (which often uses a GTK interface the way GNOME apps do), therefore, WM themes are different from GTK themes.

Cannot find any location with the directory named xfwm4 any where on my system...!

EDIT: I googled from WM tutorials. Could not find that either...
