Gnome session

I am using Ubuntu 6.0.6... i installed Automatix and then went to install kde.

kde installed and i was asked if i wanted to use kdm instead of gdm..stupid me said yes. now i have lost my gnome session from my login.. i only have "default" "kde" "failsafe".

I tried to edit the /etc/X11/default-window manager file and changed kdm to gdm...but when i re-booted i was in command line. So i did an /usr/sbin/kdm and got the Xserver back and changed gdm back to kdm.

I know there is a way to add the gnome session to the login...but i'm not smart enough to know what to edit to be able to do it.

cheers

this what i get when i reconfigure gdm:

* Reloading GNOME Display Manager configuration... * Changes will take effect when all current X sessions have ended.
invoke-rc.d: initscript gdm, action "reload" failed.

** (process:5298): CRITICAL **: egg_desktop_entries_add_group: assertion `egg_desktop_entries_lookup_group (entries, group_name) == NULL' failed
linuts@linuts-desktop:~$

I guess theres something screwed somewhere...

See if this helps! Quoted from Ubuntuforums, do a search on Google for ubuntu forums and add a piece of your error code following a comma after ubuntuforums for other support.

"Log out of gnome
Go to tty1
Log in as you and delete the gnome and gconf folders (note the dot!):

Code:
rm -rf .gconf* .gnome* .nautilus

Code:
reboot ("sudo reboot" will reboot directly from tty1)

Now you should see the default theme. At least I did. The next thing I would do is reinstalling kwin. Yes, I'm not joking. From synaptic or the terminal, whatever you prefer. The window manager is named kwin. Do you get any messages?

If you also have the game kwin4 installed, I'd be glad if you also reinstalled it.

Now please run again " sudo update-desktop-database -v". Do you still get that CRITICAL message near kwin?"
