gnome-open won't open new firefox windows
I can't open links in most applications unless firefox is already running.

I've tracked this down to an application called gnome-open that handles the opening of URLs within most applications.

If I run it from the terminal I get this error message:

richard@richard-desktop:~$ gnome-open
richard@richard-desktop:~$ Error: No running window found

If I do the same with a firefox window open it works fine.

Anyone know what's going on here?

It's a limitation in the current implementation of Firefox. It also doesn't work correctly if you are running multiple head (two or more X displays).

You can use Firefox for your normal browsing, and set your preferred web browser to another (Opera, Epihany, Konqueror, etc.). That way links you click on will work, and your primary use is still Firefox.
