Girlfriend annoyed- no music privelages
 

Hi All,

I'm running dapper and created a user account for my girlfriend. Everything's cool except she doesn't seem to have system permissions to sound & audio. In her gnome, the speaker icon (just to the left of the time & date) has a red "x" next to it. When I click it, I get the following error mesg.:

"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.

You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu."

I get sound in my account (the account I created during the installation) with no problems- both system and audio devices. I suspect this is a permissions issue but after poking around the filesystem am left not sure where to go or what to edit. Any ideas?

Just a guess ... Is the girlfriend in the 'audio' group?

I'm looking for a group called "audio" (via "users and groups"), and don't see one on my system.

Just check what groups your regular user is in, and make sure she's in the same ones.

Your girlfriend's username should be in these groups: dialout cdrom floppy audio dip video plugdev lpadmin scanner

Cool. Audio works on her account now. Girlfriend is happy. My work is done. However... given our difference in musical taste, I wonder if I should have left things the way they were. ;-)

I know you've solved your problem but I thought that those not used to the concept of Linux group might find the following a little more intuitive since it ties privileges directly to users.

System - Administration - Users and Groups - Tab:Users - select the user and click Properties - Tab:User Privileges - check boxes for the privileges desired.

Thanks for that HOWTO Fragos. Yeah, the gui makes it very easy to edit user group permissions. For those who want to know what file that GUI edits, check out /etc/groups. I love the gnome front-end apps. and I love even more when I know the back-end equivelant; makes me feel much less like an MS Windows softy and more like a Linux power user. ;-)
