Getting wireless cards to work in Ubuntu

I often wonder if I am alone with my frustration with wireless cards and Linux.

I have two cards:

-WaveLAN Silver Turbo 11mb card
-Proxim Orinoco 11b/g card Model 8470-WD

The Proxim card has never worked under Linux, iwconfig and cardctl find it and the power light comes on, but that is it. Looks like the right modules have loaded for it.

The WaveLAN card did work under the Ubuntu Live Disk, but once I did the install, it doesn't work at all. Wireless modules have loaded for it as well, and cardctl and iwconfig don't help at all.

What do I have to do to get either card to work under Ubuntu. The Proxim is a better card, but the WaveLAN card worked right away under the Live install, so I have better hopes for that card.

Any ideas?

thanks

I've found these instructions to be most helpful in getting my wireless NIC working with Ubuntu SetupNdiswrapperHowto. Additionally, there's a lot of good information in the Ndiswrapper wiki.

Thanks for posting a reply.

I'll look thru these and give it a shot and will followup.

Ok, after I rebooted for some reason the AP signal strength detector is showing the wireless card as wlan0, and I had it originally setup under ath0.

I cannot connect to the internet now, how do I setup the card under ath0, not wlan0?

thanks
