First of all I'm new to Ubuntu I've previously run Mandrake/Mardriva for over 10yrs however that computer died last weekend so had to get a new box and decided on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS as the distro of choice. I've got it pretty much set-up with a few exceptions one being spamassassin. When installing via the software center I get a compile error referencing File::Scan::ClamAV perl module. I've attempted to install it via CPAN and keep getting the output shown on pastebin -
http://pastebin.com/bdurgL6X I've worked around that by disabling the clamav.cf file however a compile error was still there. I removed that version and installed SA from CPAN and there were no errors however I can't get the darn thing to start. There is a spamassassin file in /etc/init.d but when running "service spamassassin start" nothing happens and from previous experience I know that I should see "starting spamd then 'ok'". I've run sa-update so I know the rule files are in /var/lib/spamassassin/3.004000/updates_spamassassin_org (I've checked). Running "service --status-all" shows spamassasin listed with a [-] which I'll have to assume means it's not running. Any help on this for a Ubuntu newbie would be greatly appreciated.
