Getting audacity to run

I went to the audacity web site for a download and from there went to the ubuntu specific site. Got the file audacity_1.2.3-1_i386.deb
Change the permissions to +x, extracted the files to a new directory. Ended up with 3 files control.tar.gz, data.tar.gz and debian-binary. Changed the permissions on debian-binary to +x and ran it. Doesn't seem to do anything. What else do I need to do? I'm a noob so be gentle and type slowly.

Thanks.

You're not supposed ro unpack the deb file. That's your installer. Assuming Ubuntu uses dpkg like any real Debian system:

As root, switch to the directory where your deb package is, and ...
# dpkg -i audacity_1.2.3-1_i386.deb

I found the right repository and Synaptic did a wonderful job of downloading and installing audacity.

Thanks for the rude reply rickh. If simple questions offend you, why do you visit linuxquestions? I would think that a lot of questions get asked on this forum. Often my google search leads me to just this sort of a forum for my answers.

Which rude reply he has given you the solution in a perfectly acceptable way.
