using synaptic to install the gatos drivers so I can hopefully actually use my Ati All in wonder 8500 TVcard properties.
Using gatos-conf:
this error is returned
sudo gatos-conf
Unable to open /etc/XF86Config or /etc/X11/XF86Config/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Can't make backup file /etc/X11/XF86Config/etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
Unable to open /etc/X11/XF86Config/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Not really sure what that means, but I seem to recall that a silent command line is a good command line.
I have tried to get this software working many many times before on many many distros. I was hoping this would be the miracle cure for gatos but it seems pretty hopeless any help would be great.
That's because there is no file /etc/X11/XF86Config/etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/XF86Config. There are, however, the files /etc/X11/XF86Config and /etc/X11/xorg.conf; both of which control your X configuration, depending on which X server you have (XFree86 uses the former and X.Org uses the latter).
The easiest fix I can think of is to symlink or X configuration file to one of the files gatos-conf expects--you can use a command like "sudo ln -s /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/XF86Config" (the former file is your X configuration file and the latter is one of the files gatos-conf refers to).
You will need to build the kernel module from the source code. If you haven't yet, download and install module-assistant. Then run it as root, select the fglrx driver, and it will build and install it for you.
Strange but i dont see fglrx-driver in Synaptic. I've got the fglrx-kernel-source however. do i need to find a specific driver for my card in synaptic or is it just missing a place to search for packages from?
