Gatos on Ubuntu error. Cannot edit x conf

using synaptic to install the gatos drivers so I can hopefully actually use my Ati All in wonder 8500 TVcard properties.

Using gatos-conf:
this error is returned

sudo gatos-conf
Unable to open /etc/XF86Config or /etc/X11/XF86Config/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Can't make backup file /etc/X11/XF86Config/etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
Unable to open /etc/X11/XF86Config/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Not really sure what that means, but I seem to recall that a silent command line is a good command line.

I have tried to get this software working many many times before on many many distros. I was hoping this would be the miracle cure for gatos but it seems pretty hopeless any help would be great.

Thanks

That's because there is no file /etc/X11/XF86Config/etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/XF86Config. There are, however, the files /etc/X11/XF86Config and /etc/X11/xorg.conf; both of which control your X configuration, depending on which X server you have (XFree86 uses the former and X.Org uses the latter).

The easiest fix I can think of is to symlink or X configuration file to one of the files gatos-conf expects--you can use a command like "sudo ln -s /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/XF86Config" (the former file is your X configuration file and the latter is one of the files gatos-conf refers to).

ok the symlink worked perfectly. Able to exit gatos-conf without error.
Now how to verify the card is recgonized/configured properly?

when i run xatitv i get:
GATOS: No ATI PCI/AGP Cards ?
GATOS: gatos_inita(): Invalid argument
xatitv: gatos_init(): Invalid argument

so obviously something is still missing here... But we are getting closer

Have you installed the drivers for your ATI card?

daniel@daniel-desktop:~$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.4.1)

Looks like the ati driver is not properly installed... Phooey. Who knew it would be such a monkey on my back to get this up and working properly?

Ok... where do I look for the Ati driver to then get it working with linux?

You're going these packages:

fglrx-driver
fglrx-driver-dev
fglrx-control
fglrx-kernel-source

Open up Synaptic and get them.

You will need to build the kernel module from the source code. If you haven't yet, download and install module-assistant. Then run it as root, select the fglrx driver, and it will build and install it for you.

just another resource tool for drivers:

I found this link here to be really helpful..

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide

These worked for me.

Later I decided to make my own kernel for various reasons, and I could not get the driver s to install by the method on that page.

Ironically, the ati...run file the 32bit installer worked fine once I made it executable and sudo installed it.

So maybe, really, ?? at this time we don't need to go thru the dpkg method? and can use the 32 bit installer.

But as previously mentioned, out of the box there are alot of items that u will need to have synaptic/apt-get install for yourself.

Strange but i dont see fglrx-driver in Synaptic. I've got the fglrx-kernel-source however. do i need to find a specific driver for my card in synaptic or is it just missing a place to search for packages from?
